A Terrific Morning Tea

Lupus1

Last Wednesday 13th May Wollongong City Council held a morning tea to raise funds and awareness for Lupus.

The event was the inspiration of Council’s in house lawyer, Raylee Golding, my friend and colleague in the Legal Division, who wanted to do something to show her support for me as I went through a rough time after being diagnosed with Lupus in September last year.

The show of support was terrific with around 30 people baking delicious goodies to sell on the day and around 70 people attending the morning tea itself. We also had a generous $50 donation from our foyer coffee cart operator – Ka-fe - who agreed to donate 50% of every coffee sold to those attending the morning tea.

The morning tea, together with funds collected from selling merchandise, raised over $700, a pretty good effort (we thought) for a first time event in support of an illness no one knew much about.

We couldn’t be more pleased. Apart from the money raised we really feel we have made a significant contribution towards expanding knowledge about Lupus here in Wollongong.

My Story – Perline Murko

perline

My name is Perline Murko. I was diagnosed with SLE last year. My diagnosis completely changed my life in many ways other than physical; it made me realize how important family and friends are in times of crisis. I want to give back and help those who are in similar circumstances.

On Friday May 15, to celebrate World Lupus Day, I arranged a barbeque with Australian Catholic University, Strathfield campus to raise funds towards a good cause. I personally requested students to wear purple or a set of butterfly wings were provided to wear. A selfie was taken and photos were uploaded with the hastags #PutOnPurpleForLupus or #ButterfliesForLupus. This was spread awareness of the tissue disease. Many people were on board to support their awareness and kindly donated gold coins on the day.

Despite the windy weather, it was a wonderful turnout and the amount of support received was difficult to describe. I am grateful for the volunteers who helped out and the Lupus Association of NSW who had provided essentials such as brochures and balloons. I am looking forward to organizing another successful fundraiser.

My Story – Belinda Jobson

2015-05-19

I'm making a difference and running for a cause that's close to my heart. I’d appreciate any contribution, big or small.

Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice which is the Lupus Association of NS W.
This is my story: Lupus is one of those "invisible illneses". Most of the damage caused by this mysterious, chronic illness is internal. Certainly there are external signs at times, however the external damage is only a fraction of what is really going on inside.

As a result, explaining my lupus is not an easy task. I know that if I share all of the symptoms and complications I have, many people could feel I'm exaggerating- especially if it is thrown out there in a disorganized fashion. At times I have felt judged because so many of my problems cannot be seen from the outside.Im sure we have all experienced that at one time or another, but it doesn't change the reality of what Lupus is and does. The support of others and their acceptance is something we all need.

I can recall several times when I have told people of my condition only to discover that they have never heard of Lupus and those that have heard of it often don't understand it.
Lupus is not easy to define. There is no clear description of what it is or what it does because it can attack so many different body systems that no two people have the exact lupus. It has many different faces and presents itself in many ways. It continues to evolve and change.

It seems once I get a handle on it, something new pops up. Thanks heaps for reading this and for your support, Belinda

My Story – Nadine Knox

nadine

I've chosen to run in the City 2 Surf in memory of Katie. She is not only family to me but is also a friend.

Katie recently passed away from Lupus. She fought a battle for 15 years and after watching one last sunrise she passed away peacefully. She was an amazing mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, cousin, aunt & friend. I want to make a difference and help people like Katie. With our effort we can raise awareness and much needed funds for Lupus Association of NSW Inc. So please, donate to this wonderful cause.

My Goal is to raise $5,000. Thank you for your support……Nadine

Rest in peace Katie.

I urge you to support this cause. I’ve suffered from Lupus from almost 7 years now. Unfortunately I will not be able to take part in this year’s event as I’ve been struck down with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. My family has railed together to raise money and run for me which I appreciate and love very much. Please donate to Lupus Association to help find a cure.

A message from Ross Sergi. We wish Steve & Maria and his team all the best and Thank You for your Support.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PRESIDENT
                                    BARBARA WARD

certificate-barbara

Barbara Ward, Managing Director of the San Foundation was awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation for her volunteer contributions in the community on Wednesday 21 May 2014. This was part of the 25th anniversary of National Volunteer Week which was launched to recognise the contribution of volunteers in NSW.

Apart from a very demanding day job Barbara has generously given up her time to “do good” in the community for the past 21 years. This has included helping homeless people, cooking for older people in our community, overseas aid, teaching Sunday school and scriptures at Gordon East Primary school, helping individuals in need or simply fundraising for worthy causes. Barbara also sits on a number of Charity/Not-For-Profit Boards where she uses her skills to help these worthy causes raise their profile and funds whilst turning these organisations into sustainable and viable businesses.

In accepting her award Barbara said she was humbled. "I am passionate about our community and the people who are not so fortunate – a small act of kindness goes a long way sometimes. I don’t do it for recognition or money I just love making people happy – it’s a privilege”

The celebration was attended by 200 guests along with a number of Members of Parliament. National Volunteer Week is a chance for the community to celebrate the powerful contribution that volunteers make to our lives. Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello said the Government’s $30,000 contribution to the award fund is recognition of the importance of volunteering in NSW.

“This year our State’s $2 million plus volunteers will make a contribution worth an estimated $5 billion to our economy. Volunteers are the lifeblood of so many facets of our society, including aged care, emergency services, environmental management, healthcare, sport and tourism – all of which simply could not operate effectively without them."
